Principal's Corner
Hello Gompers Community,
My name is Maixia Thao and I’m honored to be selected as Principal of Gompers Elementary School. I’m thrilled to be back and serving the same school community where I first began my career as an educator 13 years ago.
As an MMSD alumna, parent, and educator, I have great pride in and commitment to give back to my community in service of social justice. My journey as an educator started at Gompers as a fourth and fifth grade teacher. My teaching experience includes serving as an English as a Second Language Teacher and Bilingual Resource Teacher. I’ve also had experience at the district level as MMSD’s Hmong Language and Cultural Curriculum Development Teacher Leader, where I developed and oversaw the implementation of the district’s first ever bilingual Hmong-English program (now housed at our neighboring schools, Lake View Elementary and Black Hawk Middle School). During this time, I was also an Equity Fellow, one of 16 select staff members across the district. Currently, I am the proud Assistant Principal of Sherman Middle School, where I’ve had the opportunity for the past four years to co-lead and transform the school community into one of excellence, belonging, and continuous improvement. I’m excited for the opportunity to continue my journey in serving the north side community alongside all of you.
