Tragedy in Colorado Springs

With profound sadness, we have learned about this past Saturday’s horrific tragedy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where five innocent people lost their lives to an unspeakable act of gun violence. It was especially sickening to learn the affront to human decency, appears to be an attack perpetrated by hate toward the LGBTQIA+ community. Waking up to this terrible news on Sunday morning hit much deeper, knowing Sunday was national Transgender Day of Remembrance. It is imperative we not let this unconscionable act of violence deter us from continuing to root out all forms of hatred. No community should ever have to endure this level of violence and heartbreak. 

Today, I strongly affirm our unwavering support for our LGBTQIA+ scholars, staff, and community. Through the power of education, we will continue to resist homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, racism, sexism, ableism, and all forms of injustice and hate. It is our collective goal and responsibility as a school community to co-create safe and inclusive learning spaces where ALL students feel they belong and human decency resounds throughout every classroom, school, and community.

We understand how acts of violence and hatred in other parts of the country can cause a significant degree of anxiety and emotional distress for our scholars, staff, and families. If you, or anyone you know, is struggling with processing recent events, we encourage you to reach out to your school, who can provide resources and support. 

Finally, we ask you to join us in keeping the victims, families, survivors, and Colorado Springs community in our thoughts today and in the days ahead.
